Biography
Žarko Puhovski is a Croatian professor, political analyst, philosopher, intellectual and former president of the Croatian Helsinki Committee. He studied Physics and Political Sciences in Zagreb and Philosophy in Frankfurt after which he became an assistant and then professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Zagreb. Puhovski is a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg) in Berlin, a Visiting Professor at the Free University in Berlin, the European University Center for Peace Studies in Stadtschlaining (Austria) and at the University of Klagenfurt. He lectures occasionally at universities in Berlin, London, Oxford, Budapest, Madrid and Bologna, among others. He is a member of Transcend and of the Standing Committee on Intersocietal Relations of the Ethikon Institute in Los Angeles. Puhovski was co-founder of the first alternative political movement in the former Yugoslavia in 1988 (UJDI), and of the Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in 1993, serving as its President from 2000-2007.
