Dragan Štavljanin

Dragan Štavljanin has been a journalist with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Balkan service (RFE/RL) for the last 17 years. Prior to joining RFE/RL, since 1985 he worked for numerous media in Serbia and contributed to several foreign ones, too, such as the Prague based journal Transition, and an International Affairs Forum Special Report based in Washington. He witnessed and covered the most important events and processes which led to the breakup of former Yugoslavia and later during the tumultuous war time of 1990s. He has interviewed numerous international politicians and experts on Balkan issues and provided analyses on the possible wider effects of Kosovo independence vis-a-vis Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno Karabakh and Transdniester. In 2010 he gave lectures at the Sarajevo-based Peace Support Operations Training Centre (PSOTC) on the Western-Russian relationship.  Apart from journalism, in 1992 he served as an assistant to the Minister of Information in the FR Yugoslavia’s Government led by Milan Panic. He holds an MA in European Studies and International Relations from the Central European University in Prague/Budapest. He is the author of the scientific study: “Ethnification of Politics – The Case of Serbia” and the book “Cold Peace: Caucasus and Kosovo”.
