Biography
Jean Lachapelle is an Assistant Professor at the University of Oslo’s Department of Political Science. He was previously a research fellow at Harvard’s Middle East Initiative, the University of Michigan’s Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies, and the University of Gothenburg’s Varieties of Democracy Institute. His research examines the causes and consequences of state violence in authoritarian regimes. More broadly, he is interested in issues of repression, military coups, revolution, and the relationship between violence and political order. He co-leads the Pandemic Backsliding Project at the V-Dem Institute, which tracks state responses to Covid-19 and their effects on democracy.
