Biography
Markus Jaeger studied philosophy, law and political sciences in Germany, France and Switzerland after professional training as a banker in Germany. He joined the Council of Europe in 1989 and worked in various fields, including reform of the European Social Charter’s monitoring system, the setting up of administrative tribunals in Central and Eastern European countries, institution building in Albania, organizing international co-operation in the fight against corruption and working with the Secretary General’s Unit for confidential monitoring of member states’ compliance with commitments and obligations. From 2000 to 2002, he served as Deputy Director of Legal Affairs and then Acting General Counsel at Interpol. Upon returning to the Council of Europe he took the position of Deputy to the Director of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights, was then tasked with running co-operation programs for the organization until asked to head the Migration Co-ordination Division which was set up on 1 January 2012.
